CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE

Eden Hill Women’s Shelter was in a nondescript tan building that for all intents and purposes looked like a converted warehouse. There were steps and a handicap ramp that led up to the double doors at the front, which were once made of glass but due to an assault a year earlier by a jealous husband were now, thanks to a generous donor, made of heavy metal with a security buzzer. Over the door was a security camera. As they made their way to the door, Parker was not the least bit surprised that both he and Campos took the ramp. After twenty-four hours straight on the case, Parker felt exhausted, and Campos looked worse.

Once at the door, they rang the buzzer and Parker gave a thumbs up to the camera. The security lock disengaged, and they entered a small lobby with a used couch and a half-dozen cushioned chairs. In the center of the room was a coffee table scattered with old and current periodicals. A poster over the couch showed a woman’s face, badly beaten, her eyes full of defeat. The words “IS THIS LOVE?” were in bold white letters across the bottom. On the wall nearest them was another poster, this one of four children, ages five to what looked like fourteen or so. Each child looked afraid. The text on this poster was no less hard-hitting: “THIS DECISION IS NOT ONLY ABOUT YOU.”

There was something about the look in the five-year-old’s face that bothered Parker. It was surely just a child model, brought in for a photo shoot for the poster campaign, but the boy had captured the look of desperate fear better than the others. It made Parker want to hit someone, preferably any man who would hit a woman. He wondered if they would allow him to do his own poster campaign, of men beaten into submission, and mount them on the outside door with text that read “IF YOU’RE UPSET THAT YOUR LOVED ONE IS HIDING FROM YOU HERE, PLEASE GO 2 BLOCKS NORTH TO HOLLENBECK STATION AND ASK FOR DETECTIVE EVAN PARKER” so that when the next jealous husband showed up he’d think long and hard about what he did next.

There you go again, he told himself, with the White Knight stuff.

A tan woman with long curly brown hair who looked to be in her mid-thirties was seated behind a bulletproof glass window at the end of the lobby. They flashed their badges and she spoke through an intercom. “You’re here to see Maggie, right?”

They nodded and she buzzed them into a small maze of office cubicles. Parker didn’t need to ask, he’d been here a few times before and knew that Maggie’s was in the back left corner. When they got there, he could feel Campos perk up immediately at the sight of her. Maggie was dressed in blue slacks and a white blouse and had her hair back and woven over itself in one of those intricate ponytail patterns that Parker always found more amazing that anything David Copperfield could do.
